My last say

sorry, couldnt help it. i have this feeling that we'r about to get crushed though im still strongly hoping against hope that we'll be celebrating tonight. I know the rules but you always have the choice not to read it. bear with me for after all, presidential elections do not come that often anyway.

The day has come when the american people have this opportunity once again to decide which direction this country will go for the next four years or potentially, 8 years. I did what I could to campaign for Mccain and I feel that Ive already said everything I possibly could on why I believe tha Mccain is better for this country and for the world. Facts are facts. They're just there... but apparently, most people are too busy to do a little research and yet too hasty to come up with a decision. If Obama is declared the winner tonight, it will be a testament as to how far the media has come and how powerful its influence has become and I dont think this is a move for the better because little do people know, a single, powerful institution is already deciding for them. that's dangerous. Without the unending support of the media, there is no doubt that the Obama campaign woulnt have gone this far... not because of his race but because of how pathetic he stands on most issues. I dont question his patriotism, nor do I believe that he's a sorry excuse for a human being. Im sure there are good things about this man and I truly, sincerely hope he is a good person but his views on things just happen to be too far liberal and too ideological.
Oh well, guess the only thing left now is to wait and see how things will go. however it goes, I pray nothing but the best for this country and the person that sits and will soon sit in the Oval office. God bless the United States of America!

Foundations Study Group!!!!

Hey everybody...as we heard/read, our Fundamentals Final is Tue, Oct. 7 so that gives us a couple weeks to study. Juliana and I discussed meeting this Saturday at 12pm to begin studying for this final. The session can run until 6pm (or later) so if you can't make it for exactly 12 that's ok...come when you can and join in.

Tentatively:
Date: Saturday, September 27, 2008
Time: 12pm - 6pm
Location: UNLV Study Room OR Touro Study Room (we can take a vote to see which loc is more convenient - i vote for Touro)

We'd like to limit the size of the group, however, for productivity purposes, so if you're interested, please chime in ASAP!

I was thinking we could break the study days we have (granted we won't be studying only on this Saturday) into chapters/topics and then perhaps the weekend before the final we could have an all out review. We have to keep in mind that our Foundations HESI and Health Assessment Final is also that same week...so if anyone has suggestions on how we can schedule our study time so we can fit everything in, by all means....

k that's all for now....

p.s... I'm still interested in forming a study group for Pharmacology as well, so I guess we'll see how this study group works out and take it from there

Telly :o)

Universal healthcare

One of the presidential candidates is talking about implementing a universal health care plan. With the shortage of nurses that we are already facing, what effects will we experience as health care providers? Will that increase the nurse-to-patient ratio? How can it work? How long would we have to wait for a scheduled doctors appointment? If our emergency rooms are already packed resulting in hours of wait time, how much more if we switch over to the universal healthcare plan?

Please know that these are questions that go through my mind, and not statements. I am not saying that its NOT a good idea, nor am I stating that it is. This also doesnt reflect my personal opinions or stance on any particular presidential candidate. Just wondering if anyone else has an idea as to how it might work and what we might face.

a story that leads to nowhere

they say if you want to be healthy, you have to make some great sacrifices. sacrifices, meaning you should avoid anything that might cause your body harm. but growing up, I remember this person that my father knew dearly. He led a very healthy lifestyle. He rarely touched alcohol, he never smoked, he exercised every given day. He was, I remember, 70 years old when he was diagnosed of COPD. Not long after they found out what was wrong with him, he succumbed to the disease and died.

I'm not writing this to promote the kind of lifestyle that I have nor to make any justifications about it. I know the dangers of smoking and the possible consequences of drinking too much. Im writing this because I think some people have gone too far in criticizing us who smoke and drink, as if we were some sort of plagues. That real story simply reminds us all that "it rains to both the just and the unjust."

If you've gone reading this to this point, I think you got too much time in your hands because we have tons of things to do! study foundations now!

Question???

Hi guys,
I'm new to your blog and i must say, it's been fun reading your postings.
I don't know about you, but for me, the program has been an experience for me, soooo much info to grasp within a short period.Well, no time for complaints, i chose it.
I was wondering, does any know what it takes to become a certified nurse midwife, I am curious.
Iam beginning to have an interest in women's health.

nursing shortage

As we all know getting into nursing school is very competitive.  Most schools, even community college have a wait list just to get in.   The fact of the matter is that there are way to many applicants than there are slots for the nursing programs.  For a career that is going to be experiencing a shortage you would think that there would be more school offering a nursing program.  The U.S. Dept of Labor estimates that in the next 10 years there will be nearly 600,000 new nursing jobs across the Untied States.  One of the problems to the nursing shortages is most nurses go into the clinical practice of the occupation rather than the teaching opportunity.  As small amount of nurses are being trained because there are not enough instructors, training facilities and willing locations to train student nurses.  We should appreciate those nurses who decide to teach and train us, and consider going into the teaching realm once we have received our licensce.

Forensic Nurse

Hey guys check this site, it pretty awesome it tell you what is forensic nurse. They also have top paying salaries ...

Forensic Nursing is the application of nursing science to public or legal proceedings; the application of the forensic aspects of health care combined with the bio-psycho-social education of the registered nurse in the scientific investigation and treatment of trauma and/or death of victims and perpetrators of abuse, violence, criminal activity and traumatic accidents.

Cardiac Disease

Check out the website for the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI)-www.nhlbi.nih.gov! It is a great resource for understanding heart disease. You can input data such a blood pressure, cholesterol levels, etc. into a program and get a calculation for the risk for having a heart attack. It is a great tool to use with friends and family members. Put your own data in. You might be surprised to find out what your risk is!

FLORENCE Nightingale

I found this interesting article about Florence Nightingale. We have been taught that she was the women with a lamp that checked up on the soldiers during the Crimean war, however there may have been an underlying reason why she went around with a lamp to check on her soldiers, the reason being may have been because she was making sure that her nurses were not partying or sleeping with the injured soldiers.  Her reputation as a saint may have been built up by the media or even what England made her out to be.  There is a new biography that further explains the life of Florence Nightingale.  What do you think about Florence after hearing about this?  Do you think she really was all about checking up on the care of the soldiers care or checking up on her nurses?

Major Confusion on how to do breast checks

Since this blog contributors are mainly women, I thought this topic would peak some interest:
"Two large studies looking at a total of more than 388,000 women found that death rates from breast cancer were the same among women who rigorously self-examined as those who did not, while there were almost twice the number of biospy operations in the self-examination group."
Basically the articles DO NOT advise a regular  breast self-examination, it may do more harm then good. Instead they state to get to know what is normal with your body and go from there.
I know we all have so much to read already but just take a look since this effects us as women.

For some reason I can't copy and past on this blog so I have to type out the address, if you guys are having problems let me know and I will try again.

HESI Exams?????

Does anyone has any idea what the Hesi exam is really like? Different people have varied descriptions about how it is, I've even asked some of our instructors but I'm still not getting what I need to know. Are we supposed to know all the meds ( ie the prototypes ) we've discussed in class for the pharm HESI?? Ladies, you can tell I am really confused about this. Can anyone PLEASE explain it to me in words that I would understand?

I talked to Prof. Politi

Hey guys just wanted to let you know that I spoke with Prof. Politi during lab today and I showed her our blog. She said that this was fine since we started talking about different health topic.

Thought for the Day

Hi guys, Sorry Iam new to this blog posting. So is everyone ready for their big break on Oct. 17,2008. Does anyone know a good and cheap site for traveling (ex: Hawaii) ? I need a vacation!!! Sorry, I didnt post anything related to nursing or health.

I really like this quote from Forrest Gump
"Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get."

Specialty nursing

Getting back to a previous post, I think the question of nurses being part of a hospital room charge is a good one. Do you think it would make a difference if the nurse was a specialist such as a wound care nurse or an ostomy nurse who saw all the patients who needed these services and was not attached to particular rooms on a floor? Shouldn't this nurse, who has advanced training, be able to bill for these services separately?

Military Nursing!!!

This is something that I've been thinking about for a LONNNNG time and I'm wondering what other people's thoughts about it are. Would any of you joing the military after becoming a nurse? Why or why not? If so, what branch?

Also, do you all feel like Military nurses get more respect than civilian nurses?

My response to these questions are:

I WOULD join the military and I show great interest in the Navy! I'd join not only because of the opportunity to travel, but for that training I'd receive and the ability to care for soldiers who are out there fighting for our freedom, (not to sound all patriotic or anything). I don't necessarily believe military nurses get more respect, but i do believe that they get the most experience and gratification from their jobs than do civilian nurses. Anyone agree? disagree?

having to decipher dotors abbreviations & handwritting

The articles that we had to read for Prof. Politi raised some thoughts for me on the universal charting for all nurses. Why isn't this standardized charting suggested to the doctors as well? I know that they are the ones that bring in the money to the hospitals and that we are considered just a "room charge", but doesn't this sound one-sided that we are held to a different standard than them but yet we are all suppose to represent the same team? The doctors place the responsibilities of caring for their patients in our hands but don't give us the tools to help them. They often get mad at us when we question their handwriting and abbreviations, does anyone else think this is just wrong?

Matters of the heart

I found this website (http://edition.cnn.com/SPECIALS/2008/heart/) about the how heart works. It even has a quiz to test your knowledge about the heart. This website also shows the medical advances regarding heart disease, risks and new treatments. Check it out and I hope this will give everyone more knowledge about how our heart works.

Health topic

Ok, following what Puja said when she spoke to Prof. Politi, I think we can turn this into health post also. So I researched some topics. Heres the article : http://www.medicinenet.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=91301
just copy and paste it. Its an article about male sperm and soybean. I found this interesting because I remember talking to someone, a guy, about soy consumption and males. It may mean nothing but it is something to think about.
Tell me what you think or you can post new health article.
